Pastor Eric Elkin was born in Willmar, MN, but raised in Painesville, Ohio, an eastern suburb of Cleveland, Ohio. A graduate of Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota, Eric began his professional career as a youth and family program director in the Winona Family YMCA. He left the YMCA to join the intentional Christian community serving Koinonia, a Lutheran camp in the Delaware River Valley.
While living in New York, Pastor Eric also served as youth director for Trinity Lutheran Church in Brooklyn, NY and as a counselor in a group home for at-risk youth run by the Jewish Board of Youth and Family Services in Staten Island, NY. He left New York to attend seminary at Wartburg Theological Seminary in Dubuque, Iowa. While in seminary, he interned at Nordland Lutheran Church in Paynesville, MN.
The first congregation he served was Friedens Lutheran Church in Hegins, PA. He left that call to become the executive director of Camp Shalom, an ecumenical Christian camp serving eastern Iowa. In 2013, he decided to leave camping ministry to return to congregational ministry. At the same time, he and his wife, Peggy, decided after 27 years away to return to Minnesota to be closer to family. Their two adult children, Britta and Peter, also joined them in moving to Minnesota. Both currently live in St. Paul.
Pastor Eric will begin his preaching life at Advent focusing on the scripture verses which shape his approach to life and ministry. At the core of this approach are the guiding words of St. Francis of Assisi, “Preach the Gospel at all times. Use words when necessary.”
